The Japanese attacked and occupied the island, in turn the Americans attacked and established a beach head at Torokina (on the Empress Augusta Bay). This stronghold was taken over by the Australians who maintained and gradually expanded it. Cut off from resupply the islands Japanese soldiers died mainly from disease and hunger.
